Project Description

Country: Mexico

Location: Tijuana

Total Budget: $1,750

Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy

Activity Type: Education: Literacy

Summary: Provide up to 100 books and other educational resources for a library serving a disproportionate share of underpriviledged children in Tijuana, Mexico.

The Rotary Club of Chula Vista respectfully requests matching funds of $1,000 for the literacy grant in support of the Tijuana, Mexico Library Project.

Tijuana, Mexico Library Project

The Rotary Club of Chula Vista's International Projects Committee will provide books and educational resources for a library serving a disproportionate share of underprivileged children in Tijuana, Mexico. The Club will provide at least 100 children's books selected by the library to be available to children in the equivalent of grades K-3, attending schools serving low-income students. Beyond books the Chula Vista Rotary Club may also purchase additional educational resources.

This program has been very well-received by Rotarians in Tijuana and by Tijuana community leaders. In 2013, at the Ignacio Zaragoza Library in Tijuana, Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Tijuana met volunteers from the Chula Vista Rotary Club. We delivered books and resources to a very appreciative group. This year, with the help of the District's Matching Grant Program, the Chula Vista Rotary Club was able to purchase and deliver 145 children's books to a very appreciative group.

Project Timeline: Spring/Summer 2016

Number of Rotarians Involved: 4-6 from Chula Vista Rotary Club and support from the Rotary Club of Tijuana.
