Summary: Provide high interest books to students at Title One school to promote love of reading and family literacy
Research has shown a correlation between academic achievement and the number of books in the home. Twice a year (@October and April) Raising Readers holds book fairs at a Title One school in Carlsbad, offering a choice of two new and gently used high interest books for a nominal fee of 25 cents each (to promote accountability) to all students. Rotarians are involved at all levels from book selection to sorting to set up/clean up, as well as various active roles during the fairs. Teachers report even struggling readers are highly engaged in the process because of the elements of choice, pleasure reading, and ownership. A matching grant will allow us to increase the quality and variety of our offerings. When the books make it to the home, they also promote family literacy, as parents and siblings interact with the books the students have selected.

Raising Readers with Rotary book fairs were held November 13, 2015 and March 25, 2016. Each time, @12 Rotarians participated in setting up the night before and the next day distribution. Each time 750-800 children were able to choose up to 2 books. Teachers were also provided with books for classroom libraries. This is always a highly anticipated event.
