This pilot program will target economically disadvantaged Middle School children in San Diego and Imperial counties with expectations to increase the number of schools and students in subsequent years. It will offer hands-on experience in designing, engineering, and fabricating experiments to be tested in a high altitude atmosphere on the edge of space to include satellite systems. The students will build leadership, critical thinking and real world skills in various STEAM related subjects allowing for creativity, design, and use of the Arts where applicable. The program will also educate teachers and administrators on how this program can be integrated into the school curriculum.

The Program will be run through the STEAM Maker Workshop Organization who has extensive knowledge and experience in the development, organization, and implementation of educational programs with San Diego City Schools, community organizations and youth clubs. Funds will be used for equipment usage, educational materials, field trips and a part time Coordinator. Additionally, mentorship from guest speakers will be derived from various engineering firms, such as NASA, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, space and Naval Warfare Systems Command, and others.

The program will be conducted over 7 months covering electronics, physics, engineering, aeronautical, environmental and computer sciences. Students will make regular public demonstrations at various events and meetings on their progression. Results of the experiment will be recorded, communicated to the students and archived for future use. Students will then be able to share their results with the scientific community via a published journal. The practical aspects of this program will allow students to fully comprehend career field opportunities, responsibilities, educational decisions, economic benefits and the impact it will have on their total classroom experience, educational pursuits, and their lives.
