Project Description Country: USA Location: Wichita Falls, ,Texas Total Budget: $3,250 Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy Activity Type: Education: Literacy Summary: Purchase and Distribute Student Dictionaries to 3rd Graders and 3rd Grade Teachers in the Wichita Falls I.S.D. Wichita Falls has many students who are marginally supported with books and dictionaries, especially at home. The meanings of words are critical to a child's understanding of the reading assignments that they will be assigned. The Rotary Club of Wichita Falls (North) would like to propose a project that will purchase and distribute a student dictionary to all 3rd Grade students and their teachers in the Wichita Falls ISD. These dictionaries would become an important tool for the students to learn definitions and spelling of words they will encounter in the their daily reading. Members of the club would participate in putting labels in the front of the dictionaries identifying the name of the donor organization and also setting out the Four Way Test. In addition, members of the club would participate in the distribution of the dictionaries to the students at their schools. It is heart-warming to see the looks of surprise and joy when the dictionaries are handed to the students. This project will raise the profile of Rotary in our community and engender feelings of respect for Rotary among the students and families affected. I have contacted the office of the School Superintendent and been advised that there will be approximately 1,300 3rd Grade students enrolled in 2015-2016. The cost of each dictionary is $2.50 when purchased through The Dictionary Project. One of the club members has agreed to furnish free warehouse space to store the dictionaries until they are distributed. The total cost of the project will be $3,250.00. I propose a matching grant from the District (DDF) of 50% of the projected cost, i.e., $1,625.00 with the remaining 50% ($1,625.00) being raised by The Rotary Club of Wichita Falls (North).
