Project Description Country: USA Location: San Diego, California Total Budget: $3,000 Areas of Focus: Peace and conflict prevention/resolution, Basic education and literacy Activity Type: Education: General Summary: Model UN Program to train local HS students to be effective Peace Makers Del Mar Solana Beach Sunrise Rotary (DMSB) would like to sponsor registration fees of $750 per team for 4 teams of the selected students as follows to attend the 2016 Rotary Model UN conference. Each teams consist of 2 students. 1. 2 teams from Mexico/Costa Rica - $1500 2. 2 Teams from Canyon Crest HS in San Diego - $1500 DMSB Youth Programs Chair and Rotarian Kevin Cahill has been training CCA students for some time for the Rotary District 5340's Model United Nations Program trains high school students to be effective peace makers,negotiators and diplomats by debating current-day international issues that are presently being addressed by the real United Nations.Our 2016 Model United Nations Conference will be held at the University of San Diego, Joan B. Kroc Institute of Peace and Justice and School of Peace Studies, on April 9-10, 2016. We are the only Rotary District in the entire United States that sponsors and holds a Model United Nations Conference for students/youth. At our Model UN Conference, which basically simulates a United Nations General Assembly Conference, students become "ambassadors/delegates" of foreign countries. They have to argue their country's position on two General Assembly Resolutions that deal with pressing global issues that the real UN is currently addressing. In 2015, we debated the volatile conflict between Russia and Ukraine and we also tackled the alarming social problem of domestic and interpersonal violence. This confirms that we used the $1500 in DDF funds to pay for the $750/team registration fees for the Prepatoria Santa Fe team from Sonora, Mexico, and the Colegio Cientifico Costarricence team from Costa Rica.
