Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Dallas, Texas

Total Budget: $10,620

Areas of Focus: Maternal and child health, Basic education and literacy, Economic and community development

Activity Type: Education: General

Summary: Provide 10 beds for phased-out former foster children [now young adults] in group home for instilling ability to become self-reliant citizens.

A large number of youth leave foster care with no training, life skills and hope. They are literally dropped off on the street. Many of these youth end up involved in drugs, prostitution or they end up in prison.

The Phased-In Project is an 18 month program to teach former foster youth how to function in the adult world. The youth are taught to write a resume and helped with the search for a job. They are taught responsibility, self respect and self reliance. They learn all this in a safe, family environment. Phased-In Project began in Wichita Falls in late 2013, is expanding to Dallas/Cedar Hill in 2015-2016.

Phased-In is a residential facility and as such is in need of beds and furniture.

We have identified suitable bunk-beds built by a non-profit, vocational training organization in Wichita Falls. This group teaches youth job skills.

We will order the beds from the vocational group to be delivered in kit form to the Phased-In facility.

We will purchase mattresses and linens from a supplier in the DFW area.

We will send a team to Phased In Project to deliver the mattresses and linens and assemble the bunk-beds.

We intend to order the beds and mattresses as soon as the grant is approved. We expect to make the trip to assemble the beds in late October.

Costs are as follows:

Bunk-beds $800 ea x 10 units, $8000

Mattresses $1870/set x 10 sets, $1870

Linens $75/set x 10 sets, $750

With this project we will support both a vocational training program and youth transitioning out of foster care; males & females including mothers with children.
