What needs have been identified?
Missionvale Township, a shackland located near Port Elizabeth, is home to 100,000 of South Africa's forgotten people. Here the daily battle for many is simply survival. For others it is the hope for a better future. Missionvale Care Centre was established twenty four years ago by Sr Ethel Normoyle to provide education, healthcare, nutrition, skills training and many other services besides. Missionvale Township is home to many of the sickest of the sick in South Africa. It is where Aids is the scourge that does not lessen. It is where the statistics for HIV infections, unemployment, malnutrition, poverty and sickness and disease are beyond belief. Missionvale is not where you want to live if you have to see a doctor.
It is this situation that Missionvale Care Centre and Missionvale Municipal Clinic are addressing disease prevention and treatment. It is for this Public-Private Partnership in healthcare that we seek funding.
How will the project meet those needs?
At the end of 2011, Missionvale Care Centre, through the initiative of a retired volunteer doctor, Johann Strombeck, established a General Practitioners Unit ("GP UNIT"), staffed by volunteer doctors and pharmacists for disease prevention and treatment. The service is free. The demand is overwhelming. By harnessing the energy and skills of volunteer medical professionals to the infrastructure of the Provincial/Metro Health, the partnership can deliver a doctor's service, without charge to those in greatest need.
The objective of the GP Unit is to serve the patients of the Missionvale Municipal Clinic by providing direct and immediate access to the services of a volunteer doctor. Under an agreement, the Provincial Health Department will provide the GP Unit with limited drugs, pathology services and X-Ray services.
Through individual consultations the GP Clinic provides Education and training, family planning training, information on sexually transmitted diseases and balanced diet and nutrition awareness (the latter is in consultation with our nutrition and wellness unit that provides some of the nutrition patients need to take their medication effectively).
In addition the GP Clinic works with 22 Community Health Practitioners who go into the Missionvale township providing public health education and community health training.
Please specify what the project funds will be used for.
The GP Unit, staffed by volunteer doctors and pharmacists, needs funding for drugs not covered by protocols and consumables not otherwise provided:
