Project Description Country: USA Location: Stuart Florida Total Budget: $1,600 Areas of Focus: Water and sanitation, Basic education and literacy Activity Type: Education: Literacy Summary: Dictionary Distribution & Water Safety Programs for Public Schools in Martin County, Florida Martin County Public Schools have no funds for literacy programs involving dictionaries for third graders, and no funds for literacy and water safety programs for Pre-K and Kindergarten classes. Three children drowned last year, and 7 children died of drowning in the past 5 years. Increased water safety programs are needed in our community, and school system has implemented Rotary's Josh the Baby Otter program in curriculum. However additional materials are needed for incoming students, and we would like to expand to not only english but also spanish language classes. County agrees to train High school students as life guards, if we underwrite part of program as a water scholarship, and agrees to teach at risk children to float if we underwrite a portion of the expenses.
