Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Othello, WA

Total Budget: $50,000

Area of Focus: Economic and community development

Activity Type: Community Development: Renovation

Summary: Revitalize Park on Main Street to accomodate Farmer's Market and add Rotary Welcome sign

Pioneer Park, located on Main Street Othello, between 3rd and 4th Avenues, has been a small, community park for many years. In the park, there is an existing "Community Activities" sign that our Rotary club built and installed. There is also a gazebo for family activities and a retired plane. The park has been the site for the Saturday Farmer's Market for many years, but it is not set up very well for the Market. There isn't power, water, covered stalls, etc. In addition, the topography of the park is uneven.

The Othello Rotary Club has a plan to install a long open-sided structure that can be used by the Farmer's Market vendors to park under and display their produce. We also plan to design and build a new "Welcome to Othello" sign for the park that will include our local columnar basalt rock, lights, and the Rotary International Wheel. We want to import fill dirt to level the park and make it more user friendly. We also want to sandblast and re-paint the antique plane to make it more attractive. Another highlight will be to install (4) decorative street lights along Main Street, which will match the existing lights the City of Othello's Beautification Committee is installing along other portions of Main Street.

This project will greatly benefit the Farmer's Market which is operated by the Othello Chamber of Commerce, and make the park more of a destination for our citizens, thus benefiting the City of Othello. It will also relieve some of the pressure on the Othello Beautification Committee by installing an entire block of decorative street lights.

The timeline for the project is to start as soon as the Grant has been accepted. The Rotary club has many members who are ready and willing to volunteer in the form of labor. We also have members with large equipment and are ready to level the park and build the sign ourselves. We will collect bids from contractors to build the covered structure. The local power company, Avista Utilities will donate the materials and time for all of the power requirements. The project funds will be used predominantly for the structure, the fill dirt, and the painting of the plane.

Thank you for your consideration.
