No child wants to sit in a classroom wearing tatter uniforms and without the supplies necessary for getting a quality education. In today's world, families are struggling to make ends meet, there is higher unemployment, and cost of living continues to increase. With so much peer pressure and separation of classes of children, Wickenburg Rotary Club has found a way to partner together with other organizations to level the playing field so that each student can start with all the tools they need to begin their school year confidently. This type of opportunity not only affords each student the opportunity to walk into the classroom feeling equal to each other, but it also gives them the advantage of being prepared to tackle the educational/literacy process and not be distracted by outward appearances.
Wickenburg Rotary Club partners with the school district and local community action programs to purchase and provide school supplies and backpacks to disadvantaged students. The community also provides uniforms and shoes as well, thus giving every student the opportunity to walk into class with a positive, proud attitude.
Wickenburg Rotary Club focuses on the backpacks and supplies which include paper, construction paper, spiral notebooks, composition books, index cards, pencils and pens, pencil case, colored markers, crayons, highlighters, dry-erase markers, binders, pocket folders and more. We tend to draw 20+ volunteers from Rotary as well as Interact to complete this project in a two day time frame, the first day to pack and the second day to distribute.
Last year we helped 308 students at approximately $16.50 each. This year we are anticipating a need for 350 students at a cost of approximately $20.00 each.
