Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Peoria, AZ

Total Budget: $6,000

Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy

Activity Type: Education: General

Summary: Backpacks for homeless students in the Peoria (AZ) Unified School District.

Peoria Unified school District (PUSD)is serving about 250 homeless students in grades K-12 during the 2015-16 school year. The District employs Sen Schubert, a full time "Homeless Liaison," a wonderful resource for needs assessment for the local Rotary Clubs. She has created the "Parent Involvement Backpack" project, providing these families with backpacks customized for each student and containing community resource information, age-appropriate educational and art activities that students and parents can do together, and school supplies.

Sean says, "Our district wide homeless education program serves students who are facing challenges that often make coming to school a daunting experience. It is our goal to provide the materials and means necessary to help our more vulnerable students achieve success in school. Should we receive grant funding, the money would be utilized to supply qualifying students with backpacks, school supplies, (i.e. paper, writing tools) supplemental educational materials, and activities to encourage parental involvement. It may sound like a small act but when I ask parents about their thoughts on the items that we have provided to their children, the response is often appreciative and heart felt.We are very excited to be considered for the receipt of this grant."

With $6000, we will provide fully stocked customized backpacks for about 100 students.
