The Tongass Narrows body of water is a favorite walking/biking area for all members and tourists of Ketchikan. It stretches from Rotary Beach to Mountain point (approximately 2 miles). Needs identified are resting areas for allowing elderly, mothers with young children, and disabled to rest while enjoying the path. The timeline: within the next 12 months (weather depending).
Project funds will build 2 or more concrete pads large enough to accommodate a stroller, walker or bicycle and a 4 foot bench for viewing, with a 3 ft fence around the pad to prevent anyone from going over the edge to the water. These concrete pads will be 6ft by 10 ft with a full fence around the edges, with a bicycle rack attached to the outer area of the fencing. a 4 foot bench will be bolted to the pad and placed for whale watching, fish and eagle viewing and resting from hiking.
Materials needed at the time of grant application is; concrete, gravel, fencing, benches, permitting, bicycle racks, project equipment, and concrete forms.
Ketchikan First City Rotary has 40 members that will be assisting in the acquiring in kind materials and equipment to reduce the cost of the project. Members will be pouring the concrete, preparing the site and installing the equipment. With Alaska being limited on local materials we will depend on local venders to assist in gathering the materials needed. Members will be assigned to work with the State of Alaska to obtain permits and meet the State permitting requirements.
This project will be a high visibility project with signage and access for the entire community. At the completion of the project it is First City Rotary history to conduct a dedication to the State and Borough officials and public notices will be out for the dedication of our community project.
