Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Vista, CA

Total Budget: $6,000

Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy

Activity Type: Education: Literacy

Summary: Provide books to elementary schools in Vista to enable and increase reading and thus improve literacy

The Rotary Club of Vista is very concerned that between 30-40% of children cannot or do not read. This has negative effects on their schooling, life experiences and potential for successful lives.

Key members of the club discussed these concerns with the Superintendent of the Vista Unified School District. When asked how the Vista Rotary club could assist in improving children's reading he replied that there are multiple reasons for this but one very big reason is the lack of books to read in many homes.

To address this, the Rotary Club of Vista will:

1. Obtain a recommended list of books

2. Work with school principals to determine the best way to distribute the books

3. Identify ways that these books are most likely to assist the students

4. Deliver, the books to schools

5. Read to classes

6. Ensure that our name-plate is on the books

7. Work with the principals and teachers to get pictures/letters from the students

8. Secure school assistance for appropriate PR in newspapers, web and social media.

This is an important community concern. Rotary is addressing it and we want the community to be aware of it.
