Going into the elementary schools in San Juan Del Sur, Nicaragua, is heart-breaking. There are very few posters on the walls, very few books, sometimes a white-board,(but no dry erase markers) and other teaching materials available. The students in the 38 elementary schools within the district, have few if any supplies, such as: backpacks, notebooks, pencils, markers, books, tablets, crayons, colored paper, dictionaries and other supplies that are taken for granted in the United States. A team of Rotarians have traveled, at their own expense, to SJDS,Nicaragua for four years and there is still an extreme need! There is now a "sister"Rotary Club in San Juan Del Sur, and they are beginning to try to raise money to assist us in providing educational materials and supplies in the district. Some of the volunteers from Gillette help with painting and small repairs to schools, teach basic hygiene and spend time playing soccer during the week in early February when school starts in Nicaragua.
