Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Greeley Colorado

Total Budget: $2,000

Areas of Focus: Basic education and literacy, Economic and community development

Activity Type: Education: Literacy

Summary: 375 books provided to migrant children attending a Christmas Fiesta in Greeley

Every year the Migrant Christmas Fiesta serves families through northeastern Colorado. The Greeley Fiesta will be held this year on December 11, 2016. Migrant children are identified by the Centennial Board of Cooperative Education and invited to the Fiesta to celebrate Christmas with Santa, food and gifts. Last year, 800 children with their families attended.Greeley Redeye Rotary wishes to provide as part of the Fiesta, three things: first, volunteers to wrap the hundreds of presents that are distributed to migrant children in Greeley; second, support the celebration by manning the event as Santa and Santa helpers, and third, providing books as gifts to support the prominent literacy component of the Fiesta celebrations. Each year, in addition to a holiday gift, each family has gone home with the gift of a special book to share the joy of reading. The book is selected by the committee and vetted through the High Plains Library District. Since all gifts and food is provided through donations, the Fiesta is in need of a sponsor to provide the books for the families. RedEye Rotary would like to be that sponsor. In order to purchase the books, the club wishes to spend $2,500 at $6.48 per book (approx.) to purchase 385 books for the children. These books are used long after Christmas according to many stories told by children (now grown) who have received these books at the event. RedEye Rotary will be provided signage at the event and in publicity surrounding the event as a sponsor as well as volunteering in our identifiable shirts when possible.

Redeye Rotary members donated these books for the Migrant Christmas Fiesta. Members also participated on Saturday December 10 to wrap presents and on Saturday December 17 to volunteer. Pictures are available but the site is not uploading at this time. I will do so later but wanted to get the project reported. Rebecca
