The Nyamphande Orphanage and Community School, located 125km outside Lusaka, Zambia, has no library or other location to store books, no computers, and very few textbooks, all because of extreme poverty. Textbooks are especially critical for eighth and ninth graders because Zambia holds mandatory nationwide testing in ninth grade to determine if a student will qualify for secondary school. Secondary school creates an avenue to escape poverty. This project is to purchase and place a 20 foot storage container on a concrete pad at or near the school to act as a library. The container will be modified to add shelving, ventilation, and windows. The container will cost $2500 US Dollars to purchase, $1500 to modify (ventilation, windows, and shelving) and $300 to transport to the site at the current exchange rate of $1 US dollar to 10 kwacha. The building will allow light and ventilation without the need for electricity. An additional $150 will be provided for the purchase of a 4' vinyl Rotary logo, which will be required to be placed on the container/library. The sign will be produced in Lusaka and will adhere to Rotary branding guidelines. The concrete pad will be on site prior to delivery. In addition, the project will provide 15 complete student sets of required textbooks for grades 8 and 9 at $50 per set ($750 total) and three additional teacher textbook sets at $45 each ($135 total). With 80 students in grades 8 and 9, these books are estimated to improve availability from one textbook per 25 students to one textbook per 5-6 students in these grades. Text books will serve 80 students in grades 8 &9, while the library will serve all 535 students in grades K-12. Money will be dispersed to the head of Nyamphande Orphanage and School, Bishop John Mambo, for the container as we receive a signed contract from a local vendor for purchase, modification and delivery of the container. Invoices will be required for book purchases. We have estimates from Dominion Container Sales and Container Solutions, Ltd., both in Luska, for purchase, transport, and modification of containers. We will use the most reputable company and reasonably priced bid for our project. Our club member, Amy Campbell, also has a working relationship with Tanda Makai, a resident of Lusaka and partner in the Ubuntu Library project that Amy worked on after her visit to Lusaka. He will also be working with the school to solidify bids and help implement the project. Bishop Mambo and Tanda Makai have agreed to keep our club posted with photos as the project progresses and are aware of a 12 month timeline to have the project completed. Our general membership will engage in written correspondence with students at Nyamphande as the project progresses. We will ask for letters, photos, and experiences and will share with them our support for their school, our efforts at home and abroad to advance education and literacy, and the general mission of Rotary. Our members will continue to build their library with donations of books and individual contributions.
