Summary: A place where families can gather to reflect, grieve and and find the inner peace
At 10am on December 3, 2010, 50 men, women and children gathered on a narrow strip of barren asphalt surrounded by an enormous field of weeds. The somber group was composed of Marines and family members from the 3rd Battalion of the First Marine Regiment that had recently returned home from a tour of duty in Afghanistan. Marines and families had gathered for a memorial service for 13 of their fallen comrades.
It is Marine tradition that upon re-turning from battle, families of the fallen gather at the base for a formal memorial service. This service is the fulfillment of the Marine promise that no man is left behind and no man is forgotten. The service is both beautiful and heartbreaking. The "Field of Weeds" located at Camp Horno at the northern end of Camp Pendleton is the only nearby area that is large enough and flat enough for such a service.
Rotarians from Camp Pendleton who attended the service were struck by the stark and inadequate location. Soon after, they agreed that they would do all they could to improve the facilities to provide a place where families and friends could gather to reflect, grieve and commemorate the sacrifices of their loved ones and find the internal peace in a tranquil setting
With the help of the Command of the First Marine Regiment, the Rotary Club of Camp Pendleton developed a design and a plan for a football stadium-sized Rotary Garden of Peace and Tranquility. (See landscape plan in documents).
The design contemplates using the existing topography to create a two-level Garden. The first level would be paved and wired for occasional memorial services. The second level would be slightly elevated and landscaped with benches for seating. It would have areas for family gatherings and areas for contemplation. Both levels would be landscaped and lighted.
In order to distinguish and separate the Rotary Garden of Peace and Tranquility from Camp Horno (located aboard Camp Pendleton) there will be arches at the entrance to the garden. In appropriate places, there will be identity, insignia and a bronze replica of the quintessential emblem of the fallen Marine, the boots, rifle, helmet and dog tags.
The project will have two parts the first ($36,000) will be implemented in 2012-13 and the second ($50,000) in 2013-14.
