Project Description

Country: Fiji

Location: Fiji

Total Budget: $1,000

Areas of Focus: Disease prevention and treatment, Water and sanitation

Activity Type: Water: Sanitation

Summary: Water filters for 12 families in Sigatoka, Fiji who do not have access to clean water and are currently using contaminated water on a daily basis.

Give Clean Water (GCW) is an organization with the mission to provide a sustainable clean drinking water solution to every person in Fiji. Although not commonly known, Fiji has a tremendous need for water filtration; almost 50% of the Fijian population do not have access to clean water. Furthermore, the country of Fiji is relatively small and the prospect of solving an entire country's water problems is a tangible goal.

The Solana Beach Eco Rotary Club has been impressed with the GCW organization and its goals and so would like to pledge funds to provide filters to families in need of clean water in the area. GCW has spoken to our club and performed a demonstration of the effectiveness and durability of the filtration system. In addition, one of our club members traveled to Fiji with GCW and personally assisted with installing filters in a villages and schools in need and saw first hand the positive impact the filters and GCW organization has made.

If the grant is approved, GCW would be able to use the $1,000 to provide a clean water system, training and continued follow up for 12 families. Right now, the organization is working in an area called Sigatoka where the Ministry of Health has identified over 750 families that are using contaminated water on a daily basis. These families get their water from the Sigatoka River and local wells. Water samples revealed the presence of coliforms and E.coli and it has been determined that the families are sick as the result of drinking contaminated water.

These funds will go directly to providing the systems (filters and buckets) and the labor (training, installation and multiple follow ups) to ensure the system is being used and maintained. The project throughout Sigatoka is set to begin in August and your gift will be a tremendous help in serving the 753 families (over 3,750 people) living with contaminated water. Thank you!!!
