Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Cheyenne

Total Budget: $8,148

Area of Focus: Economic and community development

Activity Type: Community Development: General

Summary: Provide the Interpretive signage for the new Friendship Playground which will be geared for children with disabilities in addition to able bodied children.

A universally accessible playground in Cheyenne will be a first for our community. The playground will be providing an amenity for all of the community, but an especially important amenity for a substantial number of families who have disabled children and/or adults in their households. Many Cheyenne residents have told us that they currently travel to Fort Collins for this activity. In total, this project will cost over $800,000. Our grant and club match would fund the interpretive signage which is described in more detail below. The vision for the playground is "A destination playground for all that eliminates boundaries and promotes imagination, diversity and inclusion."

The interpretive signage that our grant would fund include an educational component for children and adults alike and will include early literacy components. The early literacy components are in cooperation between our city Parks & Rec department and our local library (Laramie County Library). (It is noted that our local Rotary foundation has supported the library with the purchase of I-Pads for their early literacy program within the last year.) The theme of the playground is "Wyoming's Exploration of Travel". Distinct areas, included in the exploration of travel theme include; "Go West" (Oregon Trail, Overland trail, the Golden Spike and Ames Monument); "All Aboard" (Dale Creek Bridge, and the Union Pacific); "Airmail" (Weather Advisory, Air Traffic Controller, Beacons, Service Stations) and "Road Trip" (Filling station, Lincoln Highway, American Dream, Road Maps, Scenic Byway). A copy of the map and layout of the areas is attached. These are more than just 'signs' - they are an important education piece that ensures the playground is enjoyed to the fullest extent.

The club members will be involved in not only sign installation, but also with tree and landscape planting. The majority of the playground equipment will need to be professionally installed for safety reasons, however if there are other opportunities to volunteer in addition to those noted our club would participate.

The specifics of the budget for the project are:

Work on the playground is anticipated to begin before the end of th summer. The siganage would presumably be one of the final elements to complete. Both the funding of the signage and the volunteer work would be completed before the end of the 2016-2017 year.

Ribbon cutting is scheduled for Saturday, June 10th although the playground is not yet quite complete. We are awaiting notification for the installation of playground signage - Rotarians from Cheyenne will participate in this as our 'hands on' portion of this grant. We cannot move forward until the contractor is ready for signage. We anticipate that will happen before the end of June 2017 after which this grant project will be complete and can be closed out.

Project is nearly complete with the exception of signs which are on order and expected within the next several weeks. At that time, Rotarians will be involved in getting the signage installed at the playground.

On August 10, 2017 Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Cheyenne gathered at the Friendship Playground and installed the final signage for the project. Pictures of the signage along with a document showing the signage expense have been uploaded to this system. This final report should close out this grant. The playground has proven to be a great addition to the Cheyenne community and is used by many children each day.
