Summary: Twilight Weekend Food Program for Children

Food for low-income children's backpacks during the school year. The children are on meal programs during the school day but have gone hungry during the weekends. This lack of weekend food means they come to school Monday morning not able to concentrate on school work. The food we give them would provide nutrition over the school weekends. Candidates for support would be vetted by the Boys and Girls Clubs of Huntington Valley through interviews and tax returns. The Boys and Girls Clubs of Huntington Valley is a 501(c)3 charitable corporation. Parents of the children are immigrants and would be required to attend no-charge classes in English and how to succeed in America (taught by the Boys and Girls Clubs) as a requirement for eligibility. At the same time the children will be in separate rooms getting help with their homework. The language/homework program occurs Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings each week. The parents and the children must attend 2 of the 3 evenings each week in order to receive the weekend food. The program will start in September and continue through May.

Rotarian's purchase food on a regular basis. Bags are packed into individual bags by Rotarians and Westminster High School Interact club. Food is distributed to 100+ children and families.

The goal of this program is to keep children from going hungry on the weekends. This allows them to concentrate and perform better at school. This effort will lead to better educated members of our community, which will lead to better jobs and fewer people needing government assistance.

All monies will be spent on food. No other expenses will be reimbursed. Food will be shelf-stable and kid friendly. Food will be cereal, top rammen noodles, granola bars, peanut butter, jelly, fruit snacks, etc.

Income:

$2,351 from Surf City Rotary

$2,351 District 5320 matching grant

Expenses:

$4,702 food. Various food from Costco, Smart and Final, and other grocery stores.

Food is distributed every Thursday night during the school year.
