Project Description

Country: USA

Location: San Diego, California

Total Budget: $2,490

Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy

Activity Type: Education: Literacy

Summary: Providing new books to students in grades 1 to 3 at Cesar Chavez Elementary, who are read to weekly by club members.

This is an ongoing program, which has been in existence since 1988. It is the flagship program of the club's school partnership activities and was recently recognized by Phi Delta Kappa, a professional education association, with it's "Kappan Community Award". This year the program served fourteen classrooms, reaching over 355 children from low and moderate income families. Annually the program funds the cost of purchasing hardcover books, which are given to each student served. Teachers have told us that, in many instances, the books we give these students are the only ones they own. Funds will be used to facilitate the book purchase.
