Summary of Existing Star Valley Rotary Mammography Project

Wyoming ranks 43rd in the United States of per capita women who seek routine mammograms. The Star Valley, located in Lincoln County, is the lowest county per capita in the State for women receiving these services.

In 2013, the Rotary Club of Star Valley developed a fund and program to provide free mammograms for women in need in our Valley. Funds were provided by local businesses, banks and Star Valley Rotary from our various fund raising projects. The initial account was $1500. Our fund raising is ongoing.

The funding and logistics are managed through the Star Valley Medical Center Foundation and Business Office. Under the umbrella of the Hospital foundation, the fund has grown, and to date has a balance of $5400. This is due to the generosity of the community and former, grateful patients.

In the initial process, our club negotiated with the Business Office and the Radiology Department to get a discounted price of $225 per patient for a mammogram and radiological reading. This is far below the regular cost.

Since introducing this program the number of women using this program are as follows: 2013 3

2014 3

2015 5

Year to date 2016 3

In 2013 and 2014 the State had a program, "Caring for Women" which was also available and some women took advantage of that program. Since then, that program is no longer available and we are seeing a slight increase is use. How many lives have been saved, we can only speculate. All communication regarding patients is strictly confidential.

To promote this program, Star Valley Rotary created a Women's Breast Care Luncheon and Fashion Show (The Mother/Daughter Luncheon) at the Hospital Conference Center. The guest speaker was a local physician and breast cancer survivor. The fashion show included several members of Star Valley Rotary.

The cooperation of many Hospital Departments was required to make this program possible. They include the following: Administration, Business Office, Food Service, Radiology, Reception, and countless support staff. Relationships with staff and our Rotary Club remain strong and communication is frequent.

Our Centennial Humanitarian Project is to share this model with other clubs and provide support and participation in their beginning efforts. Our goal is to work with a minimum of 2 clubs but we plan on helping at least 4.

District 5440

Rotary Foundation Centennial Project Challenge

2016-2017

In 2013, The Rotary Club of Star Valley established The Star Valley Women's Breast Care Fund. This fund provides free mammograms for Star Valley women in need. (put in an explanation/sentence about the club negotiating a discounted price)

Our Centennial Humanitarian Project goal is to assist other clubs develop a similar model with a minimum of two Rotary Clubs within our District. We are pledging $500 of club funds and are requesting $1000 in District matching funds to develop this Breast Care program in the other clubs. We will provide "how to" information, financial and logistic support and participation in each Club's efforts.

At this point, we have four Rotary Clubs in District 5440 showing interest in this project. All grant funds will be expended in helping these four clubs set up the program. Each participating Rotary club will match provided funding through community participation.

To monitor the effectiveness of participating clubs, we expect a quarterly report of progress. A time table of completion will be established by each participating Club at the time of acceptance of funds.

Budget: $ 500 Rotary Club of Star Valley

Our Centennial project was a great success! We partnered with the Teton Valley Rotary CLub and helped to implement 3 separate breast cancer awareness meetings in the Teton Valley, Idaho. There have been several screenings that arose from the awareness meetings!

THANK YOU ROTARY!!
