1. Dictionary Distribution: For over eight years, our club has annually raised money to distribute dictionaries to 3rd graders in at least three elementary schools in disadvantaged neighborhoods in Fort Worth. We started with I.M. Terrell Elementary with and average enrollment of 35. Another school is Edward Briscoe Elementary with average enrollment of 50 was added in 2008. Later, we added Spicer Elementary with an average of 65. Finally, this year, we added Eastern Hills Elementary with an estimated enrollment of 120 3rd graders. in all, this year we will serve almost 300 3rd graders.
We estimate our cost for this school year will be $600.00 for the four schools.
These dictionaries are distributed as early in the school year as possible so students and teachers can maximize their use and effectiveness during the year.
We do not just distribute the dictionaries and go. We pass them out then a club leader provides a 45 minute class in how to use the dictionaries. The club leader selects key words one at a time for the students to learn how to look them up and read the definition. Meanwhile other club members circulate around the room helping students who need additional assistance. Teachers typically tell us the dictionaries are the first book the students have ever received for their own personal use and care. The teachers are amazed at the overall contents of the books beyond just words and definitions.
It is very fulfilling to see the smiles on the student's faces when they receive their very own dictionary.
Normally, at least half the club's membership participate in the distribution and training.
