Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Bonsall

Total Budget: $4,500

Areas of Focus: Disease prevention and treatment, Maternal and child health

Activity Type: Health: General

Summary: Prenatal care

USR Member Doreen Tate has travelled to Uganda on multiple occasions using her own funds. Most recently she has been serving Bujja and the villages nearby. Total populastion is 3-4,000.

The biggest need is Prenatal care. Many still deliver using traditional birthing assistants (TBA). The TBA's are village women who do the deliveries without any professional training. So there are many bad outcomes for mother or baby and fistulas from a poor delivery. Even those who go to the hospital to deliver have had no Prenatal care which makes them a high risk delivery for both mother and infant. Many do not have close access to a clinic, affordability issues, transportation problems, fear of hospitals, ignorance and many more reasons. With our clinic right in the village we are proposing to offer prenatal services.

There is a Registered Nurse Midwife who has committed herself to work one day a week seeing the prenatal and postpartum women and infants. In addition to examing the patients she will do Prenatal, Postpartum and infant classes. She will help with the training of the TBA's and VHT's (village health team). We are in the process of identifying a OB/GYN Doctor to join and consult with the Nurse midwife on a monthly basis. We want to educate these women on the importance of delivering at the hospital and producing a healthy baby.

Grant funds will be used to set up one exam room primarily for prenatal care. We have a multi purpose room for education classes. Others items used during prenatal visits are lab work, medications, education and transportation costs if women need to be sent urgently to hospital.

I have put copies of the receipts where the Rotary funds were spent for this project under the PHOTO section. The total came to 22,870,000 schillings or 6370.00 dollars. The Rotary funds for this project was $4500 and has all be spent and accounted for. The rest of the funds for the equipment/supplies came from other donations. When the clinic opens I will send photos and at that time the project will be finalized and closed.

I submitted the final report and copies of receipts. Our formal dedication of the clinic will be April 1. I will be there and in Uganda for 2 1/2 months. The clinic has opened already and seeing patients at a limited rate. They did have one child who had severe diarrhea and needed to be treated with medication and IV fluids. The child needed to stay overnight at the clinic until stable. Without this clinic being opened I don't know what would have happened to this child. The Clinical Director says there are A LOT of water borne diseases there. I would like my next Rotary Project dealing with WATER and SANITATION. I believe Prevention is most important. I want to again THANK Carlsbad Rotary and District 5340 . Working together we can make an impact and save lives.
