Project Description

Country: Costa Rica

Location: San Pedro Curridabad

Total Budget: $12,000

Area of Focus: Disease prevention and treatment

Activity Type: Health: Disease

Summary: 80 All Terrain and regular wheelchairs will be provided to voluntary institutions in Costa Rica.

There is a great need for wheelchairs in Costa Rica due to an aging population and high incidence of traffic accidents. Through this project, regular and all-terrain chairs will be provided to several voluntary institutions such as palliative care organizations, nursery homes for the elderly and the disabled, children and adults, located in different urban and rural areas of Costa Rica. All-terrain chairs are in great demand because of the absence of paved streets in the rural areas and small towns, and even in the cities.

In some cases, the wheelchairs will be returned to the institutions when no longer needed, to be used by other patients.

This grant would allowed our Club to purchase 80 children and adult-size wheelchairs. This project will be part of a larger initiative which includes several other Rotary clubs in the Bay area which aims to send a container with a total of 220 wheelchairs to Costa Rica. Two Rotary clubs in Costa Rica, the San Pedro/Curridabat Rotary Club, and the Cartago Rotary Club will help with the Customs procedures, storage and distributions of the wheelchairs.
