Project Description Country: USA Location: Denton, Tx Total Budget: $8,000 Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy Activity Type: Education: Literacy Summary: A dictionary provided to every 3rd grader, each 3rd grade teacher and each elementary school principal in Denton, Lake Dallas, and Sanger school districts. This project has been ongoing in Denton Independent School District since school year 2006/2007.Each year eachieve 3rd grader in Denton has received a dictionary with us adding the Lake Dallas school district in 2013/2014. We plan to add the Sanger school district this year as well as sending 2 cases of dictionaries to Kenya for a wonderful organization called Made to Thrive. Nearly our entire club gets behind this and goes to at least one presentation and distribution, and many go to several.we have also received the support of one of our local banks as a place to store the dictionaries as well as placing the Rotary Club labels (which include the four-way test)in each book. In spite of increased use of technology, the students are thrilled to receive the books. Each presentation includes a brief history if who we are as Rotary, the four-way test, and using the dictionary to look up some words from the four-way test. We also make sure each 3rd grade teacher and elementary school principal receives a current copy of the book. Our goal is to get the dictionaries out to every student before the break in December, so they will have them when they begin learning how to use reference materials in the spring. Denton, Lake Dallas and Sanger have a wide range of students from all economic levels. For a number if the students this is the first book they own. Many come up to tell us that an older sibling still has the book she/he received as a third grader.
