Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Solana Beach, CA

Total Budget: $1,000

Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy

Activity Type: Community Development: General

Summary: Purchase Books for Casa De Amistad to Supplement disadvantaged student Tutoring Program

Casa De Amistad (House of Friendship) is a non-profit faith based organization dedicated to fostering education and character development of Hispanic children and their families living in North County coastal region of San Diego County. It is affiliated with Solana Beach Presbyterian Church.

The primary activity to accomplish their goal is their Core Tutoring Program, Study Companions. Approximately 200 low income students, with over 130 in pre-school to 6th grade, meet twice weekly during the school year for 1.5 hours each night with tutor and mentor volunteers to assist with basic core academic subject and skill development in English language arts and STEM related classes and subject matter so that each child has the opportunity to develop skills that will ensure academic success and character development to compete effectively with other less impacted students (socially and financially) in the high-performing schools they attend. Currently,Del Mar Rotary Club members are actively involved in providing tutoring and other services.

This grant request is submitted to enable Casa De Amistad to purchase a significant number of highly recommended 2016 award winning books for their library that will supplement the elective reading needs and English proficiency enhancement of the students while in a tutoring session or as a take home borrowing particularly for those students in the 3rd-4th grades and below. They have submitted a specific list of 49 books which need to be purchased in August for availability when this school year begins - 37 of the 49 books are for students in 3rd grade and below. The budget includes the specific amount to purchase two each of the identified books, approximately $912.38 as well as provide some additional funds, approximately $87.62, for future identified books and miscellaneous expenses to identify the books as donated by Del Mar Rotary.
