Project Description Country: USA Location: National City Total Budget: $1,000 Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy Activity Type: Education: Literacy Summary: Establish a business/innovation/science, BIS, library within National School District. The National School District has 5,800 students enrolled and about 85% are categorized under the socioeconomically disadvantaged and all ten elementary schools in National City are Title I. There is a huge need to introduce business, innovation, and science (BIS) pathways which often lead to high paying careers and often breaking cycles of poverty in households. Our goal is start introducing BIS literature to youth and cultivate and create interest in these fields. Our long-term goal will be to create a BIS library at the ten elementary schools. National City Rotary Club will have the opportunity to integrate reading visits during Read Across America which occur every school year in February. Our members will be able to visit and our club will also provide four BIS Mentors visits per school year (BIS University Professor | SUHI Science Teacher | BIS Graduate Student | BIS Professional). The National City Rotary Club request that Literacy Grant funds be used to purchase books/literature with business, innovation and science themes.
