Reading is one of the most important skills our students have to learn. Without reading, their education in other subject areas, including math, becomes almost impossible. Unfortunately, many of our students come to us in kindergarten without pre-reading or reading readiness skills. From day one, teachers engage their students in literacy related activities to build a reading foundation, but since reading readiness is individualistic, not all students leave kindergarten with the skills and strategies necessary to read.
We all know that parental support is an enormous factor in a child's academic success. So, one of the keys to closing the gap for students who are struggling in the area of reading is to work with their parents and provide them with the literacy education and tools necessary to help their child. At Capri, we offer a literacy workshop to parents of 1st grade students who are not reading at grade level. Parents learn specific strategies for helping their beginning reader, which are the same strategies used by their child's teacher in the classroom. In addition to learning reading strategies, parents are also provided an individualized literacy notebook with tools and activities to support the reading process.
One of the most important tools included in the literacy notebook is a book bag with 5 leveled readers, which are rotated every week to provide consistent practice at that particular student's reading level. As students progress, they receive a book bag at the next level to practice at home with their parents.
Book bags at appropriate levels for grades 3 and under with a total of 140 books at $3.50/book with tax is a total cost of $529.20
