Project Description Country: USA Location: San Diego Total Budget: $2,000 Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy Activity Type: Education: Literacy Summary: 3rd Grade Dictionaries This project addresses the Education & Literacy areas of focus. Provides dictionaries for 3rd Grade students in 17 elementary schools throughout the Southeast San Diego community. Budget cuts have affected schools in multiple ways including eliminating distribution of reference books like dictionaries to each student. The dictionaries are an important tool that helps students improve overall learning, writing skills and comprehension skills. Educators tell us that 3rd grade is the pivotal reading level for every student. Personal dictionaries will help students learn the meaning and use of words thereby fostering creative thinking and better writing skills. This will inspire them to excel in other subjects and be better prepared to achieve in ways which will insure they become productive citizens. 3rd grade test scores are used as an indicator to project the number of prisons need in the future. Statistics show that failure to achieve a passing grade in reading & comprehension limits and sometimes eliminates opportunities for the child when the become an adult.
