Project Description Country: USA Location: Mineral Wells,TX Total Budget: $5,000 Areas of Focus: Maternal and child health, Basic education and literacy Activity Type: Health: General Summary: Ready to eat food will be provided to children from food insecure homes in Mineral Wells, Texas. Backpack Buddies Mineral Wells started in 2010 by First Methodist Church and is focused on eliminating childhood hunger in our community. The program feeds 185 to 220 children per week at five schools. The program is completely supported by the community. The average cost per child for the school year is $108. The program begins after the first week of school when the teachers and counselors have identified at-risk children. Backpack Buddies provides food with no or little preparation required for the children to eat over the weekend during the school year. Our club members participate in the preparation of the back packs on a rotating basis. We have a list covering the rest of the semester involving 15 Rotarians.
