Project Description

Country: Australia

Location: South West Rocks

Total Budget: $20,000

Area of Focus: Economic and community development

Activity Type: Community Development: General

Summary: We would like to provide Beach Matting to assist handicapped people with wheelchairs to access the beach - also parents with prams to have easy access to the water

As a tourist destination, we have seen the need for beach matting to be provided on one of our beaches at South West Rocks. This will enable people who are confined to wheelchairs, the elderly who use walkers, and young families with prams and push chairs to enjoy the water and beach activities. The South West Rocks Surf Life Saving club is having the ramp widened at Horseshoe Bay by the Kempsey Shire Council, and we would like to provide the matting as an extension of this facility. One of our members is a paraplegic and wheelchair bound. Her experience in this field has been invaluable in sourcing the company that provides the matting and the wheel that would allow easy accessibility to laying it across the sand. We will be working closely with the Kempsey Shire Council and the South West Rocks Surf Life Saving Club to bring this project to fruition, through fundraising and ensuring we meet the council regulations. To this end, we have had the area measured through aerial digital technology and the approximate quotation is in excess of $20,000 (this is including the wheel for storage). Our members will be involved with raising this money through various community activities and we have taken this idea on board as our main project for 2016/17. We believe this is an excellent facility for our local community, tourists and covers all ages and fitness levels. The value in being able to access the water at our beach is invaluable to improve the health of those people who otherwise would not be able to enjoy the ocean.

We are presently working with our local council to identify the best supplier for our Beach Matting project. A demonstration of the product is being organised and negotiations between the council and the Australian Surfing Association are taking place to secure storage and responsibilities for the laying out and taking in of the matting when required by the local community. We are waiting for the outcome of these meetings and a date to be fixed for the demonstration to be done on our local beach at Horseshoe Bay.

This project is awaiting approval for storage of our equipment from Kempsey Shire Council. We are working closely with the council and our local Surf Lifesaving Club to ensure we have safe storage prior to buying the equipment for our beach matting and floating wheelchair project. A ramp for disability access is being discussed.
