Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Carlsbad, CA

Total Budget: $2,000

Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy

Activity Type: Education: Literacy

Summary: Provide high interest books to students at Title One school to promote love of reading and family literacy

Research has shown a correlation between academic achievement and the number of books in the home. Twice a year (@October and April) Raising Readers holds book fairs at a Title One school in Carlsbad, offering a choice of two new and gently used high interest books for a nominal fee of 25 cents each (to promote accountability) to students in grades K-3. Rotarians are involved at all levels from book selection to sorting to set up/clean up, as well as various active roles during the fairs. Teachers report even struggling readers are highly engaged in the process because of the elements of choice, pleasure reading, and ownership. A matching grant will allow us to increase the quality and variety of our offerings. When the books make it to the home, they also promote family literacy, as parents and siblings interact with the books the students have selected. If the grant is unable to be funded at the $1000 level, we would happily accept a matching $500 grant available for literacy projects.
