Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Anchorage, Alaska

Total Budget: $1,000

Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy

Activity Type: Education: Scholarships

Summary: Give one additional $500. scholarships to worthy youth-at-risk graduating from Anchorage SAVE High School.

Anchorage Midtown Rotary Club has been awarding one or two $500.00 scholarships to graduates each year from SAVE (Specialized Academic and Vocational Education) High School in Anchorage. For more than 30 years, SAVE has provided a proven alternative program that specializes in meeting juniors and seniors "...where he or she is." Coursework is tailored to individual students who are significantly behind in credit and have difficulties in a large high-school setting. Student performance goals are set to earn a diploma and graduate from high school. Academics are combined with vocational experience training, service learning, and community involvement. Students attend SAVE for three periods, either in the morning or in the afternoon, after which they attend King Career Center or work a minimum of four hours of paid employment at certified businesses.

Anchorage Midtown Rotary Club wants to continue awarding at least two scholarship in 2018. The club believes these awards recognize and affirm worthy youth-at-risk by providing funds to help alleviate some of the financial pressures of advanced education or training. Recipients are nominated by SAVE teachers and staff based on their academic and vocational accomplishments. A representative of Anchorage Midtown Rotary will award the scholarships at graduation ceremonies in May 2018. They will also be invited to attend a club meeting to share their accomplishments and goals with the entire membership.

The Club Treasurer signs all checks for disbursement of grant funds. A separate club member who is in charge of the grant, must sign / approve the voucher authorizing disbursement of funds from the grant. The grant reporting will be done by another Club member who neither authorized disbursement or signed checks disbursing grant funds. A separate ledger will be kept for the District Grant.

The club received $500 in DDF and contributed $500 for a total of $1,000 for this grant. However, there are duplicate lines in the Final Report at #7 Income, which shows a total amount of $2,000 for this grant. The Final Report cannot be edited. The correct amount is $1,000 and documentation for $1,000 is attached to this grant. Recommend closure of this grant.
