Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Boise

Total Budget: $4,000

Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy

Activity Type: Education: General

Summary: Laser Cutter for making STEM class consumables for Reuseum Educational in Boise Idaho USA

Reuseum Educational offers STEM classes to at-risk and low-include teens. Several of the classes have the student building a project, like a robotic hand. The project contains wooden pieces that are expensive to buy, but easy to make using a laser cutter. The goal is to reduce the consumable price by 75% to allow more students to participate in STEM classes. There are several opportunities for maker space oriented Rotarians involvement; initialize laser cutter setup and tuning, creating the computer files needed to program the laser cutter, helping create parts on a regular basis, helping students one-on-one in the STEM classroom, and even creating new classes for Reuseum to offer. The cost projections are for the laser cutter at $3,700 and a water chiller at $556. Reuseum Educational will be contributing to cover the difference between actual equipment price and the grant amount.

Your financing needs adjusting: Boise East can have $875 DDF for its $125 contribution, reducing the balance needed to $3000. Boise's share must equal its DDF request, i.e. $1500 club and $1500 DDF. Also, you need the signatures of the 2017-18 club presidents, Ron Gambassi & Bryan Connington, not this year's presidents. Cancel signature process, adjust your financing and resend for signatures. Midnight June 1 is deadline for signed application

The Rotary Foundation approved the district block grant on July 17, 2017. Your project is approved. Having more money available to us from The Foundation, the district committee is increasing the DDF for your project. To get the additional money, go into your grant and cancel the signature process (description tab – admin.). Then go to the financing page and edit your financing for Boise downtown only to reflect $1,525 of DDF. You may reduce your club contribution or keep it the same, making sure your project remains “fully pledged”. Then send again for signatures. Changes will be reviewed by the district before final approval and notification of grant award. If you have questions or need help, please contact Jedd Thomas at (208) 339-1185.

A current $3,699 bid for the laser cutter is $1 lower than the original bid submitted in the Documents tab section of your project. The additional item in your project is a water chiller with a bid price of $556. The DDF check for $2,520 will be payable to the Rotary Club of Boise. Matching funds from your club may come from your club foundation account.

Jedd,

Part of the agreement with Reuseum is they would cover any cost overruns. As the price of the laser cutter was bouncing around, it hit the grant $4000 limit at one point. Reuseum went and bought the needed chiller. Therefore, you will not see grant funds being used to buy a water chiller as mentioned in the description. Let me know if you have any concerns.

4-Oct-17

by Jedd Thomas

The change to limit the use of grant funds to the purchase of the laser cutter and no longer fund the chiller is acknowledged and approved.

The laser cutter was purchased and delivered. The laser cutter will be installed in the next two months after the Reuseum building remodel is complete. The description of the actual item purchased was uploaded along with the receipt.

Steve Rodoletz presented to our Rotary club. The Reuseum had an opportunity to rent the adject building space. It was ideal for classroom use (with ADA bathrooms). The installation of the CO2 laser cutter was delayed until the building space was remodeled into a classroom. The CO2 laser cutter is now unboxed and located in the back corner of the classroom (see photos). The laser cutter is in good shape, needing calibration. More aggressive ventilation may be required as well for optimum operation.

I have audited this project and there is one correction need. The totals expenses and Revenues must match. Your expenses are $3,801.97 and revenues are $4,000.00. You need to change the Revenue to match your expenses of $3,801.97.
