The Youth Center in Los Alamitos (http://theyouthcenter.org) provides afterschool programs for children with a mission to transform lives one child at a time. They are a 501c3 organization that relies on activity fees, fundraisers, and donations to provide social, educational, and recreational programs. Many of the children (65%) come from below average income families; 20% are from single parent homes. The children (55% female and 45% male) are from the surrounding communities of Los Alamitos, Rossmoor, Seal Beach, Long Beach, Hawaian Gardens, Cypress, Stanton, Westminster, and Anaheim. The demograhics inclue 30% african american, 30% hispanic, 25% caucasian, and 15% asian/other. Due to costs and limited budget resources "art days," which are a favorite of the children ages 7-15 years old, are infrequent. The childrens' schools face similar limitations for activities such as art. Our project will provide the supplies needed for 4 "art days" in the coming year. We will purchase 240 canvases, 480 paint brushes, acrylic paints, and display cases. The items will be purchased and delivered by Rotarians, news releases with photos will be provided to local media highlighting the project for Rotary and The Youth Center, and Rotarians will be able to volunteer during "art days" throughout the year.
