Summary: Provide Weekend Food for Needy School Children
Provide backpack food for underprivileged children in the Huntington Beach and Fountain Valley cities of California. Surf City Rotary-Huntington Beach members will shop for food for school backpacks of up to 90 children. On presentation of an invoice for purchase of approved food, the club will reimburse the club member/purchaser. While the children receive free or reduced breakfast and lunch during the week from their schools, often times they are going hungry over the weekend. This program is designed to provide food for the weekend time frame so the children do not go hungry and are able to come to school on Mondays ready to learn and not worried about their next meal. The eligibility of the children's families will be vetted by personnel of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Huntington Valley, California. W2's, financial statements and interviews will be required of the families. Club members will pack the backpacks on a once per week basis. Shopping and packing should involve the entire membership of the club. The program is to have a life of one school year. The total projected cost for the 90 families is $6,075, with the Club paying $4,575. We are requesting a $1,500 simplified district grant.

We started handing out backpack food in November 2012. We had a high of 97 families in one week, but the average has settled at about 54 families per week. We have gotten discounts at Walmart for most of the food. We have roughly $675 dollars of the club's money to put in before we match the amount of the grant. Things have gone slower than we perceived, but we should have easily made our minimum and way beyond by next November. In short, we have started, we have kept at it, and we are not quite finished, but this project will be a success.
