Project goals:
- Renewal beautification of Sun City, Arizona through a partnership with sun city prides to update the plantings along the major thoroughfares through sun city via their "desert canopy" project.
- Increase carbon sequestration in sun city using tall, drought-resistant broad-leaf trees along the major streets and avenues of sun city.
- Achievement of RI president Riseley's goal of planting a tree for every Rotarian in our clubs in 2017.
As part of their Desert Canopy Project the Sun City PRIDES - to date - have removed several hundred old citrus trees, planted in the 1960's, and have planted ~100 new, drought-tolerant, broad-leaf trees. Their goal is to plant another 500+ trees within the next two years. As these trees mature, they will create a canopy appearance along all the major thoroughfares of Sun City, creating a much more beautiful and inviting living environment for the entire community.
While the lure of worthy projects outside our community is great, it is vitally important that our two clubs, Sun City and Sun City Del Sol never forget who our immediate community is - Sun City and Youngtown. These are the people who live where we call home.
Not only is this project significantly improving the look and feel of this 50-year old retirement community, our participation - at the funding level requested - will fulfill our commitment to RI President Ian Riseley - to plant a tree for each Rotarian in our clubs during 2017-18. Our two Sun City Rotary Clubs will coordinate with Sun City PRIDES so that our members can participate - contribute sweat-equity hours - in this community beautification action.
Our portion of this community project should be completed by January, 2018.
