Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Garden Grove, California

Total Budget: $2,000

Area of Focus: Disease prevention and treatment

Activity Type: Health: General

Summary: Placement of life saving automated external defibrillators in public places.

These devices are proven to save the lives of victims of SCA (sudden cardiac arrest). We are working towards placing as many of these life saving devices in and around the community as we can. Sudden cardiac arrest happens approx 1000 times a day in the U.S. and these AED's are proven to save lives when applied to the victims within 4-6 minutes following arrest. We would like to become, like Seattle was in the 80's with the implementation of their comprehensive city wide citizen trained CPR program, the safest place in the country to suffer a cardiac arrest in. Dr. Bill Annan and myself originated the program, have performed all the research as well as contacting the various local and state emergency and health care agencies for approval. We also researched all the various manufacturers of these AED's so as to determine the best units for our needs. In addition we make the discretionary determinations as to where these units will be publicly placed to make the most impact upon public safety. We then make the connections with the recipient organizations and coordinate their training and certifications with the Fire Department. This simplified grant will provide us with the funds necessary to purchase three (3) units, complete with extra batteries, defibrillation pads and wall mount cases. The recipient organization this year will be the Garden Grove Little League Association and it's 3 leagues. The Little League Association will take possession and ownership of the AED's, as well as becoming responsible for the continuing training, operation and maintenance of the devices once awarded. As with all of our previous AED placements within the community, our Club also provides the CPR and AED training to the recipient organization. We also open the classroom up to all friends and family of both our Rotarian members as well as friends and family of the trainees which always has proven to provide us with the opportunity to share with them outreach information regarding our club as well as the work the Rotary International does all around the world. The formal presentation of these 3 AED's will take place on Little League Opening day on March 9th, 2013.
