The La Jolla Golden Triangle Rotary School in Jalalabad, Afghanistan opened its doors in 2004. The school, originally built for 500 students, now serves over 6,500 boys and girls daily and increases each year. As American and other allied troops prepare to pull out of Afghanistan in 2014, students, parents and community members are increasingly frightened by what will happen to the school. On recent trips by Rotary ambassadors from the U.S., students have been found crying out of fear of what will happen to them. The school, its students, and staff have served as a bridge to peace and stability, and stand as examples of the power of Rotary, local and international partnership and development success. In order to ensure the school remains a successful haven for learning and peace, a self-sustainment strategy is necessary. To this end, one of the greatest tools for learning and communication with the outside world is the computer lab at the school. Power for the school is provided by generators, and the cost of the generator and fuel for the generator is very expensive and unsustainable. Therefore, this grant seeks to place an eight (8) array solar panel that will provide long-term, sustainable power to the computer lab. The cost of the solar array, which includes installation, is $4,700US., of which $1,500 is being requested from the District and the remaining funds will come from the Del Mar Rotary Club. The project can be completed within 30 days of funding. Note: This application seeks to use funds made available from District Matching Grant P-121, which was cancelled due to policy changes in India.
