Malayika Rescue Missions (Malayika), a 501(c)3 founded by Uganda-born Rotarian Jolly Kahunde in 2013, is focused on developing and educating underprivileged children in Uganda through education, sports, personal confidence skills and other training to develop tangible goals and successful lives. Many of these children are HIV positive and require medication and developmental initiatives. Malayika currently pays tuition for 37 primary and three secondary students enrolled in two schools in Mukono and Fort Portal, Uganda. Tuition covers school fees, uniforms, pens, pencils, books, food, toiletries, and local transportation for one volunteer at each site to administer the program. Presently, Malayika's limited funds prevent expansion of the program to additional students wanting to participate, but lacking tuition payment are not enrolled in school. Each student's annual tuition averages $225. This grant will allow up to 13 additional students to be enrolled or permit any student (up to 13 students) currently enrolled to continue in school if other funding becomes unavailable. Mid-Cities Pacesetter (MCP) Rotarians Jolly Kahunde and Bill Bracken serve on the Board of Directors for Malayika as President and Vice-President, respectively, with five others (non-Rotarians). Any grant proceeds will be disbursed from MCP to this board. Other MCP Rotarians (Sharon Cox and Angie Akmajian) have been involved in fund raising and in planning and coordinating a related non-grant project (Sole Hope) to supply denim footwear (parasite prevention) to the children with additional logistical support promised from the Rotary Club of Kyotera, Buganda, Uganda.
