The purpose of this project is to provide money to cover the cost of a wheel chair lift for a used school bus that would be utilized to bring disabled children living in the surrounding communities in the mountains around the City of Parras De La Fuente, into the city for school. Presently, because it is so difficult getting these children into town, they end up not getting educated. The Parras Rotary Club would like to buy a small bus with a wheelchair lift that they can use to pick the children up and bring them to school in the city. There are two different school times that need to be accommodated. They would bring one group of kids (10-15) to school in the morning. In the afternoon, they would take them home and then return with another group of kids (10-15) for the afternoon school hours. Not all the kids are in wheelchairs but they are all disabled in some way.
The Parras RC is open to either buying the vehicle there in Mexico or buying it in the United States and importing it. They have located a couple of used vehicles in Mexico that, at today's exchange rate, would cost about $16,500 USD. The club is very limited in their resources but they will provide approximately $11,840 in maintenance of the vehicle, hiring a driver, and for fuel. They would also provide about $3,200 to cover the cost of import fees if the vehicle is purchased in the US.
All the members of the Parras RC would be involved in this project and at least 17 from the Grapevine RC. This project will also involve the D-5790 Chapter of the Rotarian Wine Appreciation Fellowship, which will help raise funds and will organize a celebration of the successful conclusion of this effort in Parras, home of the oldest winery in the Americas, Casa Madero.
