Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Greeley, Colorado

Total Budget: $1,500

Area of Focus: Economic and community development

Activity Type: Community Development: General

Summary: Partnership with Jefferson HS and Habitat For Humanity; At risk HS students learn construction while working side by side on a Habitat home for a qualifying family.

Greeley Redeye Rotary is submitting this project for a Centennial Grant. Redeye, members embrace projects which include financial support as well as the opportunity for direct/active participation of our members. This project is both in spades! Our local school district has an ongoing partnership with our local Habitat for Humanity. Habitat for Humanity, per their ongoing mission, identifies families in need of housing that are able to meet criteria including a personal contribution of sweat equity in the building of the home. Our local school district includes Jefferson High School, a non-traditional high school with at-risk students who have multiple socioeconomic challenges, some include multi-generational poverty. Jefferson High School offers a Construction Management Pathway Program to their students where part of the curriculum includes construction management and a hands-on opportunity to learn carpentry skills. A Redeye Rotary contribution to this partnership allows our members to participate in affecting change in the lives of several in our community. A family gets their own home and the high school students have the opportunity to learn and practice construction management and carpentry skills; which are in high demand here in Colorado. With this unique high school curriculum these construction-skilled high school grads are in demand in our local booming construction market and have the opportunity to earn a good wage for their families. Redeye's financial contribution will help purchase construction materials and our members will be spending time on a building site actively working along side the Jefferson High School students in the construction of a Habitat home.
