The Estes Valley Library is pleased to continue its "Welcome to the USA" program, initiated in 2016 with the stated mission, "New immigrants will have information on citizenship, English language learning, employment, public schooling, health and safety, available social services, and any other topics that they need to participate successfully in American life." Our Estes Valley community represents a diverse group of immigrants, most of whom are Spanish-speaking, but also include individuals from Eastern Europe and Nepal, among other countries. These are represented in our current services for immigrants provided by the Estes Valley Library:
1) Uno-a-Uno English tutoring program, which matches tutors with individual students. Currently we have 25 tutors and 34 students who work with this program.
2) English Conversation Café - a weekly gathering for English language learners to practice conversation centered on a theme.
3) Citizenship classes
4) Plaza Comunitaria - a program which gives Spanish speakers the opportunity to initiate or complete their primary and middle school education.
While we have the above programs, we would like to provide another avenue for our immigrant community members to access English language learning and citizenship study opportunities as attending a class or an individual tutoring session is not always possible given the work schedules of many. We believe that having iPads available for studying these areas of learning can provide for this need.
For this reason, we are requesting a $1500 grant to purchase the following:
1) 3 - iPads, model 32GB @ $329.00 each = $987.00
2) 3 - hard, protective cases for these iPads @ $50 each = 150.00
3) Miscellaneous pieces (chargers, cables) @ $100 = 100.00
4) Variety of APPS for English language learning and Citizenship practice = 263.00
TOTAL $1500.00
These requested monies, like all philanthropic support for the library, will be received and held by the Estes Valley Library Friends and Foundation, an IRC 501(c)(3) charitable organization. The library will purchase the items, and the Friends and Foundation will reimburse them from these funds. Rotary Club of Estes Park member Sarah Walsh, Development Director at the library, will be involved with this project.
