The Anchorage Mid Town Rotary Club has been awarding one or two $500.00 scholarships each spring to graduates from SAVE (Specialized Academic and Vocational Education) High School in Anchorage. SAVE, an Anchorage School District alternative high school for over 30 years, provides coursework tailored to individual students who are significantly behind in credit and have difficulties in a large high-school setting. Student performance goals are set to earn a diploma and graduate from high school with work-ready skills. Students attend SAVE for three periods, either in the morning or in the afternoon, after which they attend King Career Center (soon to be a vocational-technical high school) or work a minimum of four hours as a paid employee at certified businesses.
In 2019, Anchorage Midtown Rotary Club wants to continue awarding at least two scholarships. The club believes these awards recognize and affirm talented youth-at-risk. Recipients are nominated by SAVE teachers and staff based on their academic and vocational accomplishments. A member of Anchorage Midtown Rotary will award the scholarships at graduation ceremonies in May 2019. They will also be invited to attend a club meeting to share their accomplishments and goals with the entire membership.
The Club Treasurer signs all checks for disbursement of grant funds. The club member who is in charge of the grant, must sign the voucher authorizing disbursement of funds. Grant reporting will be done by another club member who is not connected to grant funds. A separate ledger will be kept for the District Grant.
