Rotary Club of Irvine supports and aids Veteran military in their educational process to return to civilian life and be gainfully employed. We have a supporting relationship with the college through our member Dr. Linda Fontanilla, VP for Student Services. Linda has directed that a field of scholarship applicants be chosen. They must be honorably dischraged VETs in the STEM Program (science, technology, engineering, and Math). Two Club members - Tony Murcia (Community Services Chair and Mike Javanmard - teacher) will interview the candidates and select 2 persons to receive scholarships in the amount of $1,000 each. The honorees will be selected based on their merit. The merit of the candidates will be a combination of their scholarship, background, character, academic focus, and financial need. The candidates will attend a Club meeting of Irvine to introduce themselves to the entire Club and receive their certificates. We are able to follow their progress through our member on the faculty of Irvine Valley. We hope the recipients will be able to visit with the Club at least one time in the next Club year to advise us of their progress. Our scholarships have been vitally important to our returning military since budget cuts have limited GI Bill funding to 36 months. Generally speaking that doesn't allow enough time for students to complete their degree or technical training. We believe our scholarships allowing at least 2 deserving veterans to complete their education and fill a useful and gainful place in society.
Addendum to Project Description (added after the project was signed)
Post secondary school scholarships do not qualify for a District Simplified Grant in 2012-2013 per The Rotary Foundation rules. We have substituted a Dental clinic for children in Ensenada, Mexico in March 2013. At least 10 Rotarians will assist at the clinic and we will treat 70 to 80 children.
