Project Description

Country: Zambia

Areas of Focus: Disease prevention and treatment, Maternal and child health

Activity Type: Health: General

Summary: Roof Repair at Nyamphande Orphanage and Community Center

Nyamphande Orphanage and Community School started in 1996, approximately 125 kilometers east of Lusaka, Zambia. Nyamphande serves the educational needs of nearly 600 children (10 % of whom have lost both parents to HIV/AIDS) as well as basic medical assistance for a catchment area of over 6,000 people. Originally intended to cater to the medical needs of students at Nyamphande Orphanage, the on-site Nyamphande Rural House Centre soon became a primary and essential medical resource for impoverished rural families living in the area. Local villagers, children, and other community members have relied on the Centre for treatment and management of everything from common colds and ailments to treatment for HIV/AIDS and/or TB.

The building that has served the community and allowed for government medical assistance to be provided to this community is in desperate need of a new roof. The thatched roof is no longer safe or sanitary, and the clinic has been closed by government officials until a new roof is put in place. With the clinic closed, the Zambian government is not able to send nurses and doctors to minister to the community. With cholera and malaria an ever-present threat, the outbreak of disease and the lack of sufficient medical assistance could spell disaster for an entire community already at risk in this poverty-stricken region.

Our project will fund the cost and transportation of roofing materials, as well as compensation for necessary labor associated with installing a new roof for the Nyamphande Rural House Centre (clinic). Materials will cost approximately $5040.00 US dollars, transportation will be approximately $150.00 US dollars, and labor costs are approximately $1650.00 US dollars. The total for the project will be approximately $6,840.00 US dollars. We intend to factor in an additional 10 % (684.00) for potential fluctuations in building materials and US currency exchange rates to Zambian kwatcha, as well as an allowance of $150.00 for required Rotary signage to be displayed on the clinic at the completion of the project (this amount not to be included in the 10% factored for fluctuation in building cost and currency exchange rates). The project total will be $7584.00. The project is estimated to be completed within the Rotary year of 2018-2019. Once materials and labor are secured, however, work will be done with expediency so the clinic can re-open.

The building is structurally sound, and we have been assured that the roof is the only item preventing the clinic from opening back up. Our club has a strong working relationship with the Rotary Club of Maluba, to which the Nyamphande Headmaster, John Mambo, is a member and Past President. The Maluba Club was instrumental in helping us implement a prior project at Nyamphande where we provided a much needed library and text books. We have been and will continue to coordinate with the Maluba Club projects chairperson, Gabriel Chishima, and Rotarian Rachel Ward, whom we have met personally. The Maluba club will, with our assistance in funding, be providing much needed volunteer efforts to make this project a success. They will also work to identify other specific needs in the community related to health care, education, and agricultural development from which our two clubs aim to join forces for a global grant in the near future. We intend to channel funds through the Maluba club to ensure that money is disbursed and records kept in accordance with Rotary standards.

The roof installation is complete, and a celebration of the opening of the clinic occurred at the end of February. With approximately 869.00 left in funds for anticipated currency fluctuation that did not occur, we are in the process of identifying additional supplies, furniture, etc. that the clinic may be in need of. Photos of project have been uploaded.

Our club received preliminary invoices for $400 worth of mattresses for the clinic, as well as additional text books for the community library. The combination of these invoices exceeds the remaining funds available for this grant, so we are awaiting a revised book invoice. The Rotary Club of Maluba has agreed to accept our transfer of funds once the final invoiced amount is determined. We are following up weekly

Project is complete. The project was completed with $869.00 USD left in the grant account. After several months of inquiring about additional uses for the money with no specific reply, it was decided (with District input), that funds should go back into club and district accounts. Thius, 434.50 was returned to District 5400 and 434.50 was retained by Pocatello club.
