Project Description

Location: Cottonwood, AZ

Total Budget: $4,000

Area of Focus: Maternal and child health

Activity Type: Health: General

Summary: Healing Garden for the Verde Valley Sanctuary, a shelter for victims (women and children) of domestic abuse

The mission of the Verde Valley Sanctuary (VVS) is to protect, assist and empower victims of abuse and sexual assault. In 2017 VVS provided 6200 nights of safe shelter to 231 victims of abuse at its 28-bed shelter. Living in a shelter is not easy. Most of the clients and their children suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder which can be further compounded living with strangers who also have their personal struggles. the goal of the project is to provide an outdoor space that helps relieve stress, encourages healing and nurtures healthy play for the children. The Center for Health Design identifies nature as one of the key factors that reduces patient and staff stress and leads to better outcomes and staff satisfaction. Healing gardens are often created in green space at hospitals and other healthcare facilities specifically aimed at healthy outcomes. the garden will be constructed in the shelter's backyard and will include livable space at the shelter with an outdoor seating area, shaded play area for older children, a preschool play area and a splash fountain. The total budget is $25,000. The Little Angel Foundation has committed $10,000, Arizona Community Foundation grant request for $10,000, Rotary Club of the Verde Valley $1000, Rotary Club of Sedona $2000 and with the matching grant of $2000, all the money will be raised.
