Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Matanuska-Susitna Borough

Total Budget: $1,250

Areas of Focus: Peace and conflict prevention/resolution, Economic and community development

Activity Type: Community Development: Construction/Renovation

Summary: Install roof snow stops, gas meter cover and video surveillance at community senior center

The Wasilla Senior Center serves a growing population of seniors in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough (MSB) of Alaska, serving primarily those with the most economic need. The population of seniors needing services is rapidly increasing - the MSB has the fastest growing senior population in Alaska. The community center has a continuing problem with snow/ice shedding that endangers seniors entering/exiting. This risk will be alleviated by installing snow stops over the entrance. The building's gas meter is exposed and is at risk of damage from ice/snow accumulation. Also, ice/snow build-up can prevent access to shut off the gas supply in an emergency. Installing a small roof/cover will eliminate the risk. Finally, seniors are experiencing increased crime and have asked to have video surveillance installed to deter crime and provide crime investigation evidence should a crime occur. By installing high-definition exterior surveillance cameras and video storage, the center will be able to record the exterior approaches 24/7/365 and capture images useful to police. The video system used, and camera placement will be selected in collaboration with local law enforcement. This system will be a powerful deterrent, and will provide elders with both peace of mind and a means to address criminal and nuisance activity.

Funds will purchase materials. Rotary volunteers, in collaboration with volunteers from the senior center, will install them.

This project is nearly complete. The housing over the gas main is installed, and most of the snow stops are in. The video surveillance system is operational. We have a few more snow stops to install, but we need the snow to melt from the roofing first.
