Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Ketchikan Alaska

Total Budget: $1,500

Area of Focus: Community economic development

Activity Type: Community Development: General

Summary: A concrete landing with benches and fire pit at the base of a handicap ramp to the beach surface. A public beach sponsored by rotary 2000, allowing access to everyone.

A couple of years ago our club built a concrete ramp down to the beach to allow access for anyone to the beach. We now want to add a flat concrete landing with benches and fire pit to allow access to activities such as beach fires for people who have difficulty moving over logs and uneven sandy beach surfaces. In the last phase of the project aproximaly 1/2 of the club and their families were directly hands on involved in the building of the project, as well as some Boy Scouts working on their Eagle Scout badge. In this phase I expect at least the same level of involvement. This project provides access to anyone who wants to experience beach activities such as picnics, beach fires, or playing with grandchildren, instead of having to watch from a distance. I plan to have the project finished this summer. We have engineering drawings, cost estimates and have double checked with he Army Corp to make sure it wont need any special permits. The funds will be used to pay for rebar and concrete. The forms, and labor will all be done by club members. All of the costs for the rebar and concrete are given at discounts by the local vendors.

Due to winter wether not being conducive to pouring concrete we have not finished the project. Also, the borough and the army corp of engenineers held us up this last fall with new unexpected paperwork, even though the project had been green lighted months before. It’s SEEMS to be ok with those groups now and we are waiting for better weather to complete it.
